How to choose microcement for your project

Microcement is a thin decorative coating used to create continuous surfaces with a mineral appearance. The right system depends on the substrate, the room and its intended use. A living-room floor, a bathroom wall and a swimming-pool basin need different solutions, even when the desired colour is the same.

This category brings together Topciment microcements and materials for preparation, colouring and protection. Some products are base coats or finishing coats; others are primers, resins, hardeners, pigments and sealers. Compare the complete system, including its components, rather than judging a single pack by its price and weight. Start with three questions: what will the coating be applied over, how will the surface be used, and what texture do you want?

Microcement for floors, walls and bathrooms

Floors in homes and commercial spaces

When choosing microcement for floors, consider foot traffic, moving furniture, moisture and cleaning. Select a finishing material intended for floors and a compatible protective sealer. Sttandard Microdeck, for example, is a floor finish, while Sttandard Microfino is intended for interior walls and surfaces without foot traffic. A fine texture does not automatically make a product suitable for flooring.

Explore the applications for living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens. In a kitchen, spills and cleaning around working areas matter alongside wear. For premises with heavier traffic, select a specific system according to the actual loads; the description “industrial” alone does not establish suitability.

Walls, ceilings and furniture

For walls, the main considerations are grain size, trowel effects and the room conditions. The coating can have a more even finish or a pronounced, hand-worked texture. The same colour looks different under side lighting and with different sealer sheen levels. Choose the appearance using a finished physical sample, rather than relying only on a screen image.

For ceilings and furniture, check the substrate material and its stability, including edges and connections between individual elements. A decorative layer does not stiffen a flexible board. For worktops and other working surfaces, establish water exposure, cleaning requirements and the permitted use of the complete finish.

Bathrooms and shower areas

Bathroom microcement should be selected as a complete system for the wet and dry areas. In a shower, falls, drainage, drain connections, corners and pipe penetrations are critical. A protective sealer limits water penetration through the surface, but cannot repair a leaking junction or compensate for missing waterproofing.

A water-resistant decorative finish and waterproofing have different functions. The watertight solution must be coordinated with the specific microcement system before application. For a shower floor, establish the required slip resistance of the completed finish; the rough appearance of an unsealed material does not prove its performance.

How the Topciment ranges differ

Sttandard and Unlimitted: two-component cementitious systems

Sttandard and Unlimitted two-component microcements are mixed with the specified resin. The range includes different base and finishing materials, selected to suit floors, walls or exterior surfaces and the desired decorative effect.

Compare the intended use of the base coat, finish and Acricem resin according to the system. The powder component alone is not a complete kit, and its specified mixing liquid cannot simply be replaced with water. Include both components and the remaining system layers when calculating an order.

Evoluttion: one-component powder

Evoluttion is a powdered microcement mixed with the quantity of water specified for the particular product. “One-component” describes material preparation, not the number of layers in the finished coating. Substrate preparation, suitable base and finishing grades, and surface protection remain part of the complete result. Mixing ratios from another range should not be transferred to this one.

Efectto Quartz and Efectto PU: different working methods

Efectto Quartz is a ready-to-use microcement for interior applications. The grades are selected to suit the application and desired texture. The ready-made paste removes the need to mix powder with resin, but still requires a sound substrate and the specified sealing system.

Efectto PU is a two-component, water-based polyurethane microcement. When ordering, check that all necessary components are included. Efectto PU and Efectto Quartz should not be treated as interchangeable because of their similar names and textures: preparation, intercoat waiting times and system requirements differ.

Industtrial: epoxy microcement

Industtrial is a two-component epoxy system for interior decorative coatings. Select the appropriate grade for the intended use and finish. Products labelled component A require the separate compatible component B. The listed Industtrial component A products are not selected for heated floors.

Natture: lime-based microcement

Natture is a two-component lime-based micro-mortar for decorative floor and wall coatings. It has its own set of compatible preparation, finishing and protective materials. Hand application gives the surface its character, making grain size and working technique part of the decorative choice.

Atlanttic Aquaciment: a swimming-pool system

For swimming pools, consider specialist solutions such as Atlanttic Aquaciment. Permanent immersion, the substrate and structural details require a separate system selection. Microcement does not automatically replace the required waterproofing solution. A bathroom finish cannot be transferred to a pool simply because it looks similar; permitted substrates and compatible layers must be checked for the exact product and project.

Application over tiles and substrate preparation

Microcement can be applied over existing tiles where the specific system permits this and the tiling is stable. Check for loose or hollow areas, cracks, moisture and cleaning-product residues beforehand. Tile joints are treated to prevent them showing through the new coating. This does not mean closing structural or movement joints, which must remain part of the finished solution.

Select the primer according to the substrate’s absorbency and condition. Primacem PLUS, for example, is intended for non-absorbent surfaces. Where required, the system includes reinforcing mesh and separate preparation materials. Microcement is a thin finish, not a replacement for a levelling screed or repairs to an unstable substrate. Moisture and movement problems must be addressed before the decorative layers are applied.

What the complete system includes

Each layer has a separate job: the primer promotes adhesion, the base microcement prepares the surface, the finish creates the texture and the sealer provides the specified final protection. In systems that use Presealer, this pore-filling product goes before the protective varnish and does not replace it. Reinforcing mesh is included according to the particular build-up. Acricem, Acricem Pool and hardeners for Industtrial or Efectto PU are not interchangeable.

Pigments are also selected for the relevant material. Metallic and other Topciment decorative effects are separate coatings with their own application methods, rather than substitutes for the base coat or protective sealer. Include suitable tools and consumables for mixing, application, sanding and sealing.

Underfloor heating and exterior conditions

For underfloor heating, first check the compatibility of the exact microcement and complete floor construction. Screed condition, completion of the heating commissioning cycle, permitted application temperatures and a gradual return to operation all matter. A thin coating alone does not establish suitability. This use is excluded for the listed Industtrial products.

On a terrace or balcony, consider rain, sunlight, temperature movement, falls and drainage. Topciment offers options for exterior use, but the complete build-up must be selected for the particular conditions, from preparation to the final sealer. An interior ready-to-use microcement cannot be assumed suitable outdoors because it has a similar colour. For a wider choice, compare the other floor coatings.

Microcement prices: packs, materials and installation per m²

The price of one pack is not the cost of a finished square metre. A practical calculation includes all required primers, preparation and finishing coats, resin or hardener, pigment and protective sealer. Quantities are calculated using consumption rates for the exact materials and rounded up to the supplied pack sizes. Corners, steps, niches and difficult preparation also affect the budget.

Separate materials, preparation and labour in the quotation. This makes it possible to compare equivalent scopes and check that all components are included. Use the microcement calculator for indicative quantities for the Microbase, Microdeck, Microfino and Microstone solutions it includes. Other ranges need a separate system calculation. For a project-specific selection, send a technical enquiry with dimensions, photographs, substrate type, room use, details of any heating, and the desired colour and finish. Specify floor and wall areas separately.

Sealing, return to use and maintenance

Select the protective sealer according to the system, traffic, water exposure and desired sheen. It also affects the final appearance of the colour. Recoat time, readiness for foot traffic and full curing are different stages. Follow the times for the complete build-up: a surface that is dry to the touch is not necessarily ready for washing, furniture or ongoing water exposure.

For everyday care, use a compatible cleaner and soft cleaning equipment, avoiding abrasives and dragging heavy objects. Furniture protectors help limit mechanical scratching. Explore cleaning and maintenance products suited to the applied protection. If the sealer is worn or damaged, the repair method depends on the surface condition; a decorative wax does not replace a necessary repair.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microcement

Cost per m², tiles, wet areas, underfloor heating and component selection.
How is the cost of microcement per m² calculated?

A pack price is not the price of a finished coating. The material cost per m² includes all required components and complete packs for the area. Preparation, waterproofing, labour and delivery are specified separately. The calculator gives indicative quantities for the solutions it includes, rather than a universal final price.

Can microcement be applied over old tiles?

Yes, where the specific system permits tiles and they are firmly bonded to the substrate. Tile joints and preparation for adhesion must be considered before application. Movement joints are retained. Swimming pools and other specialist uses require a separate compatibility check.

Does microcement replace bathroom waterproofing?

Decorative microcement is not an automatic replacement for waterproofing. Wet areas need a compatible solution for the substrate, watertight connections, drainage and protective sealing. A suitable sealer cannot repair leaks or an incorrectly formed drain detail.

Is microcement suitable for underfloor heating?

Only with a system that explicitly permits a heated substrate, following the required preparation and heating commissioning procedure. The listed Industtrial products sold as component A are not selected for this use: application over underfloor heating is not permitted for them.

Which materials are needed besides the microcement itself?

Depending on the system, you may need a primer, base and finishing microcement, resin or hardener, reinforcing mesh, pigment and protective sealer. A pack labelled component A is not necessarily a complete kit. Compare the price and contents of the whole compatible system.

Does one-component microcement mean ready to use?

Not necessarily. Evoluttion is a one-component powder mixed with water. Efectto Quartz is a ready-made acrylic paste. Despite its similar name, Efectto PU is a two-component polyurethane system. Preparation and sealing requirements still apply to each option.

Can any bathroom microcement be used in a swimming pool?

No. Permanent immersion requires a specialist solution, a suitable substrate and compatible materials for every layer. Microcement for a wet room is not automatically suitable for a swimming pool. Select the exact system to suit the construction, including its waterproofing solution.

When can microcement be exposed to water and used normally?

Once the relevant stage specified for the complete system and its final protective layer has been reached. A surface that is dry to the touch is not fully cured. Foot traffic, furniture, water exposure and cleaning may have different permitted times, depending on the materials and site conditions.

Choosing a microcement system

Start with the substrate, room and desired texture. State the area, whether it is a floor or wall, and whether there is direct water exposure or underfloor heating. This information helps select suitable base coats, pigments and sealers from the chosen brand’s system.
