Microcement for ceilings can be considered as a decorative finish when a connection between the mineral appearance of walls and ceiling is desired. Before choosing materials, establish the substrate, adhesion and the system’s suitability for overhead application.

Concrete or suspended ceiling

For concrete, check adhesion, contamination and levelling requirements. For suspended construction, stability, board joints and movement are decisive. The decorative layer does not correct deformation or leaks.

Lighting and decorative texture

Side lighting highlights tool marks and unevenness. A sample under the selected lighting helps establish colour, texture and finish. Plan the working areas with the installer.

Preparation before installation

Specify the area, height, construction type, existing coatings and working access. Layers and quantities are determined after selecting a suitable system for this surface.

Systems, primers and sealers

Browse the products from Topciment and Sika. Check the role of each material: substrate preparation, base coat, decorative finish, pigment or protective sealer. Product pages provide the available technical sheets. Select all layers for the same documented system, substrate and intended use.

Choosing a microcement system

Start with the substrate, room and desired texture. State the area, whether it is a floor or wall, and whether there is direct water exposure or underfloor heating. This information helps select suitable base coats, pigments and sealers from the chosen brand’s system.

Frequently asked questions: microcement for ceilings

Practical answers about substrates, systems and the specific application.
Is every microcement suitable for a ceiling?

No. Check the permitted application of the particular material and system for the relevant substrate and overhead work.

Can a concrete ceiling be treated?

With a suitable system and preparation of the concrete. Remove weak areas, formwork oil residues and poorly bonded coatings before the decorative layers.

What matters with a plasterboard ceiling?

Construction stability and correct joint detailing. Moving boards or unsuitable treatment can affect the finish.

Will the coating hide a leak or crack?

Address the cause of the leak or crack before decoration. Covering an active defect is not a lasting repair.

How should texture be selected with concealed lighting?

Use a sample under the actual or similar lighting. Light grazing the surface makes texture and small irregularities more visible.

Are the layers the same for a ceiling and a floor?

Do not assume the same system. Check the substrate, application, tools and required protective finish for each surface.

What does a ceiling quotation include?

Preparation, materials, decorative and protective layers, and access to the working area. Specify the area and height in advance.

Can it be matched to walls in the same colour?

A coordinated decorative appearance can be specified. Assess samples on both surfaces, since lighting and viewing angle affect perception.
